Moonstone is an orthoclase form, a mineral of the feldspar group and the mineral kind of silicates. It is usually worn as a jewel stone. Its name is due to its shine type, similar to that of the moon. Moonstone is also sold in artificially dyed (e.g. pink) forms.
The stone brings the hormone cycle and the natural rhythm into accord. Given the fact that it helps women to reach their hormonal balance, it is both employed against period pains and after birth-giving. It promotes fertility and, as its name recalls, it can also help prevent sleepwalking.
On the emotional level, moonstone brings forth emotional deepness and promotes feminine features. The stone makes the person open for inspiration and all sorts of impulses. Moreover, it has balancing capabilities and contributes to a good sleep.
Moonstone is the ideal stone for Pisces people, while it is also seen as the balancing stone for Cancer ones.
Tiger-eye is a mineral of the quartz group. The precious stone may vary in colour, from yellow to red brown.
It is nowadays used in the treatment of migraine and to prevently release cramps. Tiger-eye is also useful for bones and joints. It can also accelerate the healing process in case of bronchial affections. Asthmatic people can also benefit from the stone.
In the Middle Ages, people thought that wearing a tiger-eye gave protection against evil looks and witchery effects. Today it is rather believed to help keep the balance in difficult situations and the right distance to things. The stone helps indecisive people to make up their minds. Tiger-eyes convey warmth, good feeling and trust in one another.
Tiger-eye is the ideal gem for Virgos. The stone also helps Gemini and Leo people to get away from the negative fluxes of their signs.
Shellfish are soft animals, which defend themselves from wounding and natural enemies by means of two lime shells. These may be used as starting material in making jewels. However, they should be handled with care, particularly the thinnest ones as they are very fragile. Yet these are the ones with which the jeweller obtains the most beautiful results, since the light can come through at some places.
Shells are often found in the arts and mythology. For instance, Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and the erotic desire, was borne in a shell.
The Turquoise is a non-transparent, blue-green semi-precious stone. Nowadays it is possible to produce this stone artificially so well that experts may be in trouble to distinguish an original one from an imitation.
The turquoise has an antiseptic effect and strengthens our immune system. It helps to combat reflux problems and stomachaches, soothes pains and reduces all sorts of inflamations.
The cold colour is a helping force for people, who find it hard to say no and make their own needs known. The turquoise is a stone that promotes our creative side and above all, influences our oral expression positively. It helps, in general, to distinguish happiness from unhappiness and to master our lives.
As one may infer from its bright blue colour, this stone is ideal for Pisces and Aquarius people.
The name of the carbonate mineral Malachite derives presumably from the Greek word for Malva. This inspired it because of its layers of diverse green tones, similar to a visible wood grain.
Malachite helps mainly in the treatment of asthma and eye infections, but also in the case of poisoning since it can detoxicate and clean the body. The same as other stones, it facilitates birth-giving and helps combat period pains.
On the emotional and mental level, this stone increases one´s fantasy and promotes spatial thought. It helps to bring consciousness forward, in that it provokes clear dreams and makes inner images, desires and repressed feelings to get real.
Malachite is ideal for Capricorn people, although it also helps the Taurus ones to get rid of their negative moods.
Rhodium is a chemical element that belongs to the platinum metals group, since it comes in platinum ores.
Rhodium plated brass refers to brass that has been coated with rhodium.
Stainless steel´s extremely shiny surface is fascinating, since almost any unevenness can be appreciated. Besides, it is a hard, mar-resistant and stainless material. Stainless steel does not tarnish and allergies to it are very rare.
The Mother of Pearl is a natural product that grows out of shells and snail-shells. The reflecting effect of mother of pearl, which may vary in colour on the basis of light type, is also due to the layered shell build-up.
The material originated at the inner shell side of sea snails and shellfish is called pearl mother.
If we look at wood from the cultural point of view, copses are the oldest useful plants. Wood itself is one of the most important plant products for being particularly diverse but also a growing raw material.
Jewels made out of wood are comfortable to wear, since they work as insulating power against warmth and cold - as opposed to say steel that conducts those. Wood jewels are also valued for their warm colours and the typical irregular year rings.
Wood is yet relatively fragile and should not be worn while bathing or showering, since it absorbs moisture.
For the transformation of wood into jewellery there is a varied array of techniques to be used, for example, carving, planing and dragging.
PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is a soft and elastic material (commonly referred to as ´plastic´).
PVC´s main features are very high resistance, minimum weight and warmth conduction capabilities. PVC is well tolerated by the skin, hence allergies to it are rarely found. Wounds resulting from wearing PVC jewels are very unlikely given its softness and elasticity.
The Zirconia (formula: ZrO2, Zirconiumdioxide) is synthetic replacement for the diamond. Its sharpness is almost as high (8.5 as opposed to 10), which also makes it hardly endangered against damages. However, it may be used to scratch to pieces something else very easily.
The zirconia can be obtained in different colours and levels of transparency. It is normally cut in faces (in the same way as glass).
Glass is an amorph, i.e. not crystalline substance. Glass is usually shaped through melting. The materials seen in daily life as made out of glass (e.g. drinking and window glass, TV screens and light bulbs) are just a section of glasses.
Murano glass, which was first created in the Murano Island near Venice in the 13th century, remains the most renowned glass in the world for glass jewellery.
Also known as ´Sterling Silver´, Silver 925 contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Pure silver is not used in jewellery making, as it would then be too soft. Regarding piercings, Silver 925 is employed just for the piercing components that are not introduced in the body (e.g. the motive pending of the lower ball of some tummy piercings).
Silver has a seductive look with its warm colour-temperature and has been used in jewellery making since ancient times. Pure silver is also the best light reflector and is therefore utilised for mirror production.
The disadvantage of silver has to do with the fact that it can react to air sulphur (depending on air quality and skin type).
This will be commonly known as ´tarnishing´ or ´oxidation´, although it has nothing to do with an oxygen reaction but with sulphur.
The best way to remove those dark spots is to put the jewel in a boiling water pan with a little salt, covered with (non-transparent) aluminium foil. We also recommend the stain remover ´Sigolin´.
Pewter (Sn) is a chemical element as well as a silver-white to grey, shiny and very soft metal.
Stannum metallicum (´metallic pewter´) is also used in the production of homeopathic remedies. Pewter can react to air elements, talking then about tarnishing. For cleaning purposes, it can nonetheless be easily polished again.
Pewter is together with copper the second component of the bronze alloy. Allergic reactions to pewter are really rare.
Cotton is a natural fibre which is obtained from the seed hair of the cotton plant. This fibre is usually spun in very thin threads, out of which fabrics are produced. Cotton fabrics are comfortable to wear as they do not scratch the skin. Regarding its potential allergy level, cotton is extremely well tolerated.
Amethyst is a violet variety of the quartz mineral. Its violet colour ranges from a very light pink tone to a very dark violet. Its name comes from the Greek word amethystos - ´which works against drunkenness´-, i.e. the old belief by which whoever that wore an amethyst was immunized against the intoxicating effects of wine. The stone´s healing power is also thought to be true today, since it promotes meditation, turns anger and rage away, and diminishes drug and alcohol dependency.
Concerning its influence on the body, this gemstone promotes smoothing of the conjunctive tissue, making the skin more resistant to external aggressions.
Amethyst is used to combat migraine and other muscular contractions due to stress. Indians would place amethysts in their bedrooms to obtain a refreshing and nightmare-free sleep.
Amethyst is associated with the astrological sign of Pisces, but it is usually prescribed to Sagittarius and Aries people for its re-balancing effect.
Steel refers to all the metallic alloys, whose main component is iron, being carbon its second alloy element. It belongs to the most commonly used work materials since it owns several features, resulting from alloying in combination with warm and thermomechanic treatments, that make it particularly useful in a wide application spectrum.
Agate is one of the so-called opaque quartz gems. What is captivating about it is its beautiful fine-grained, fibrous drawing. Its bands or layers can be, if seen independently, of several colours or almost of one colour. Nevertheless, agates may be easily dyed if submitted to a chemical treatment followed by heating, which leads to an array of colours, such as mahogany, black, yellow, brown, green and blue.
Agate is said to be a protective gem during pregnancy for both the mother and the baby. Its banding acts as a protection of organs, which are also made out of several layers of skin and tissue, as well as of the eye´s conjunctive layer and the eyes in general.
This stone carries protection, a feeling of balance and assurance. It also promotes logical-rational thinking and concentration on essential matters.
Agates are ideal for Capricorn and Taurus people, while also being suited to counterbalance Pisces´s negative forces.
Leather is a material, which is obtained from the animal skin through tanning.
Leather has been and is used as ever in producing clothes such as coats, and shoes, as well as all kinds of accessories. For instance, we are used to having leather hand gloves, purses, hats and belts. But jewels are often made out of leather: necklaces with leather cords, Indian jewels, hair accessories or leather bracelets.
Leather can be rubbed with oil to make it more supple. Thanks to this oil, leather becomes also waterproof. Oils of animal origin make leather softer and prolongs its life.
