Gold-plated refers to the covering of metallic and non-metallic objects with gold. There are around half a dozen different procedures: yet the commonest of them all today is the galvanic one, which implies the use of a salty solution and electrical power.

Surgical Steel 316L
Surgical steel 316L, originally employed mainly in medical implants (e.g. artificial joints), has now become the most important material for piercings. Its extremely shiny surface with practically no uneven traces captivates everyone. Surgical steel is also very mar-resistant, and there are very few people allergic to it. Surgical steel is cheaper than titanium because it can be processed more easily, hence offering a wider array of motives as well. However, it is not advisable to use surgical steel for first-time piercings, since its nickel component as part of the alloy may become active when in contact with the sore salt of a newly pierced skin (we recommend to use Titanium G23 or Bioplast instead). Surgical steel can then be used without any trouble once the piercing is totally healed, since it will not give away any nickel. Allergies to it are extremely rare.
