Materials

Buffalo bone
Buffalo Bone was already used by American Indians in jewellery making. It shines like ivory in a white sort of fashion. Being an organic material, the skin tolerates it really well. No allergic reactions to it are known to date. This bone material is also particularly light and hardly passes heat on, which makes it be more comfortable than say stainless steel.

Mother of Pearl
The Mother of Pearl is a natural product that grows out of shells and snail-shells. The reflecting effect of mother of pearl, which may vary in colour on the basis of light type, is also due to the layered shell build-up. The material originated at the inner shell side of sea snails and shellfish is called pearl mother.

Wood
If we look at wood from the cultural point of view, copses are the oldest useful plants. Wood itself is one of the most important plant products for being particularly diverse but also a growing raw material. Jewels made out of wood are comfortable to wear, since they work as insulating power against warmth and cold - as opposed to say steel that conducts those. Wood jewels are also valued for their warm colours and the typical irregular year rings. Wood is yet relatively fragile and should not be worn while bathing or showering, since it absorbs moisture. For the transformation of wood into jewellery there is a varied array of techniques to be used, for example, carving, planing and dragging.

Acrylic glass
Acrylic glass, scientifically known as polymethylmethacrylate or PMMA, is commonly referred to as plexiglas. This synthetic material, similar to glass, is often used as an alternative to the latter for its great elasticity. It is also well valued in the imitation jewellery, since this material - in contrast to ordinary glass - is light, less delicate and also more transparent. Acrylic glass even lets UV- and X-rays get through, being then extremely shiny in disco lights. Its other advantages are its lack of toxicity and perfect condition through time and under any climate.

synthetic resin

PVC
PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is a soft and elastic material (commonly referred to as ´plastic´). PVC´s main features are very high resistance, minimum weight and warmth conduction capabilities. PVC is well tolerated by the skin, hence allergies to it are rarely found. Wounds resulting from wearing PVC jewels are very unlikely given its softness and elasticity.

Zirconia
The Zirconia (formula: ZrO2, Zirconiumdioxide) is synthetic replacement for the diamond. Its sharpness is almost as high (8.5 as opposed to 10), which also makes it hardly endangered against damages. However, it may be used to scratch to pieces something else very easily. The zirconia can be obtained in different colours and levels of transparency. It is normally cut in faces (in the same way as glass).

Glass
Glass is an amorph, i.e. not crystalline substance. Glass is usually shaped through melting. The materials seen in daily life as made out of glass (e.g. drinking and window glass, TV screens and light bulbs) are just a section of glasses. Murano glass, which was first created in the Murano Island near Venice in the 13th century, remains the most renowned glass in the world for glass jewellery.

Surgical Steel 316L
Surgical steel 316L, originally employed mainly in medical implants (e.g. artificial joints), has now become the most important material for piercings. Its extremely shiny surface with practically no uneven traces captivates everyone. Surgical steel is also very mar-resistant, and there are very few people allergic to it. Surgical steel is cheaper than titanium because it can be processed more easily, hence offering a wider array of motives as well. However, it is not advisable to use surgical steel for first-time piercings, since its nickel component as part of the alloy may become active when in contact with the sore salt of a newly pierced skin (we recommend to use Titanium G23 or Bioplast instead). Surgical steel can then be used without any trouble once the piercing is totally healed, since it will not give away any nickel. Allergies to it are extremely rare.

PVD-coated

Paua Shell
Paua Shells have an opal-like surface of mother of pearl, whereby opal-like here means that the jewel shows a mixed-stained colour game, similar to that of an opal.

Silver 925
Also known as ´Sterling Silver´, Silver 925 contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Pure silver is not used in jewellery making, as it would then be too soft. Regarding piercings, Silver 925 is employed just for the piercing components that are not introduced in the body (e.g. the motive pending of the lower ball of some tummy piercings). Silver has a seductive look with its warm colour-temperature and has been used in jewellery making since ancient times. Pure silver is also the best light reflector and is therefore utilised for mirror production. The disadvantage of silver has to do with the fact that it can react to air sulphur (depending on air quality and skin type). This will be commonly known as ´tarnishing´ or ´oxidation´, although it has nothing to do with an oxygen reaction but with sulphur. The best way to remove those dark spots is to put the jewel in a boiling water pan with a little salt, covered with (non-transparent) aluminium foil. We also recommend the stain remover ´Sigolin´.

Amber
Amber is a yellowish ornament gem. It is not transparent as it is the result of fossilised resin, that is, as years pass by tree resin leads to a firm substance. The fact that amber stones may contain vegetable or animal rests give them a very special character to the human eye. In esoterics, amber has always been thought to be a protective and healing stone, which puts fear away and provides life joy. It also helps children to put teeth on more easily. Amber is the ideal stone for Gemini people, while it is also indicated to Cancer subjects to counterbalance their negative forces.

Buffalo horn
Buffalo Horn was already used by the American Indians for the creation of jewels. Buffalo Horn shines in brown to black tones, and its thinner parts may be slightly transparent. Being an organic material, the skin tolerates it really well. No allergic reactions to it are known to date. This bone material is also particularly light and hardly passes heat on, which makes it be more comfortable than say stainless steel.
